VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
with ZUBIN MEHTA
and LANG LANG
We are immensely proud and privileged to bring to Mumbai the world famous Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra with Maestro Zubin Mehta and the virtuoso Chinese pianist
Lang Lang in one concert on March 11, 2009 and one solo recital on March 12, 2009
at the Homi Bhabha Auditorium.
The Vienna Philharmonic
With its history of more than 160 years, there is perhaps no other musical ensemble
more consistently and closely associated with the history and tradition of European
classical music than the Vienna Philharmonic. Richard Wagner described the orchestra
as being one of the most outstanding in the world; Anton Bruckner called it "the most
superior musical association"; Johannes Brahms counted himself as a "friend and admirer";
Gustav Mahler claimed to be joined together through "the bonds of musical art"; and
Richard Strauss summarized these sentiments by saying: "All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic
reveals itself as understatement." Since its inception through Otto Nicolai in 1842, the
orchestra has exercised a fascination upon prominent composers and conductors, as well as
on audiences all over the world, based on a homogenous musical style which is carefully
bequeathed from one generation to the next.
Lang Lang
Heralded as the "hottest artist on the classical music planet" by the New York Times,
26-year-old Lang Lang has played sold out recitals and concerts in every major city in
the world and is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Berlin Philharmonic,
the Vienna Philharmonic and the top American orchestras. He is seen as a symbol of the
youth and future of China.
